The third single from the album "Toto IV". A huge hit all over the world and one of Totoīs biggest hits ever. The song is the only Toto-song that has reached #1 on the US Billboard (February 1983). At the same time it hits #3 in UK. The song was certified gold as late as in October 1992. The idea of the song came from David Paich, playing on the piano. Jeff Porcaro explains the idea to the song: "A white boy is trying to write a song on Africa, but since heīs never been there, he can only tell what heīs seen on TV or remembers in the past. Geographically it doesnīt make sense... The Kilimanjaro isnīt near the river named in the song." Although "Africa" is one of Totoīs biggest hits ever it almost didnīt get it to the album. The band had worked with the song for a very long time and was so tired on it that they almost skipped the song when compiling the album. The song is also included on "Past To Present" and "Greatest Hits". A live version of the song, recorded at the Standard Bank Arena in Johannesburg, is included on "Toto XX 1977-1997". The linear notes to the song on "Toto XX 1977-1997": "The reason why cuts 11, 12 and 13 are included with this other material is that we wanted to offer something special from our recent trip to South Africa. This was the first time we had played there so we decided to create something new out of something old. Thus we added 'Baba Mnumzane' to the front of 'Africa' as an intro with a traditional 7-piece South African choir. To augement that Simon recruited 5 local percussionists and rehearsed the day of the show, some newly written parts for them to play. At this point there were 18 musicians on stage bringing them and us together for a memorable event that we felt we should include here." In my opinion this is one of Totoīs best songs.

A THOUSAND YEARS (Joseph Williams, Mark T Williams, David Paich) The Seventh One (1988)
Lead vocal: Joseph Williams
Song arrangements: Mark T Williams and Toto
Strings arrangements: David Paich
Conducted by David Paich
The idea of this song originally came from Mark T Williams. He explains: "I wrote the progression and groove one night in the summer of 1987. It wasnīt any kind of inspired or conscious effort, it just came out. My brother Joseph came home from a session for 'The Seventh One' and told me he thought the song would be something good for the record (that was funny to me because the original working title on the sequencer disk was 'Something Good'). He took a cassette to the studio the next day and played it for Jeffrey Porcaro, who loved it and said: 'Weīve got to have this thing'. I then finished the music with Joseph. David Paich and Joseph wrote most of the lyric."

Thus we added 'Baba Mnumzane' to the front of 'Africa' as an intro with a traditional 7-piece South African choir. Guitar: Steve Lukather
Keyboards: David Paich
Bass: Mike Porcaro

This song was a B-side to the single "I Will Remember". The working title for this song was "Jake To The Bone II". The title "Daveīs Gone Skiing" is said to relate to the fact that David Paich were on a hollyday trip quite a while during the album sessions. When the decision fell on "Daveīs Gone Skiing" as the title for the song, it became one one the suggestions for the album title. The band decided though on the title "Tambu" after a suggestion from fans during a dutch radio show in which Steve Lukather participated and asked for title suggestions for the album. The version on "Toto XX" was recorded live at the Standard Bank Arena, Johannesburg. The linear notes to the song on "Toto XX 1977-1997": "The reason why cuts 11, 12 and 13 are included with this other material is that we wanted to offer something special from our recent trip to South Africa. This was the first time we had played there so we decided to create something new out of something old. The Antlantic/Stax feel to this finger snapping, hand clapping R īn B groove was conceived at a time when Disco was king, to our dismay. So we paid tribute to it at the end with Daveīs glorious cry to the new frontier, 'Itīs Disco time'. Well, we were laughing. Luke passes the audition on this one in spite of the really weird guitar sound." The linear notes to "Miss Sun": "The next two songs here are our original demos to get our record deal. The band wasnīt even really a band yet. These were recorded over a wild weekend at Davlen in the Valley, 1977, with all our friends stopping by to party and dig what we were doing. Paich had convinced himself that he 'was' Al Green... He was green all right. This was made prior to the Boz Scaggs hit version which we also played on, but it never captured the rawness and honesty of this demo, we think?"
