The Earthsea Series

The Earthsea Series comprises five novels and a collection of short stories:

  1. A Wizard of Earthsea
  2. The Tombs of Atuan
  3. The Farthest Shore
  4. Tehanu
  5. The Other Wind

There is also a collection of short stories called Tales from Earthsea.

These are all available as separate volumes. The first three novels are collected in a single volume called The Earthsea Trilogy. The first four novels are collected in a single volume, not very surprisingly called The Earthsea Quartet.

Sci-fi channel are reportedly working on adaption of both The Earthsea trilogy and The Left Hand of Darkness. (Read about it at scifi.com or comicsutra). (Spotted by The Ekumen) 30 Apr. 2002

Review from Doug's Library (www.phys.tcu.edu/~ingram/books.html):

Very different fantasy series from what I'm used to. Le Guin uses a somehow more "distant" writing style when referring to her characters, rarely giving us glimpses of what motivates them as seems to be the case with more recent books. The actions of the characters speak for themselves very effectively. This series follows a wizard from his first introduction to magic, then through a series of adventures (sometimes the adventures seem completely allegorical yet real at the same time...a nice effect) in a world consisting of lots of islands and a big ocean. Short for a four-book series, but I liked it all right.
