The Mbunas

The mbunas are the name of endemic small rock living malawi cichlids. The name mbuna comes from the language spoken in northern Malawi, chiTumbuku.

These fishes are found in depths between 0-40m, in rocky shores and on reefs. Many of the mbunas that can be found all around the lake have many different color variants and almost every isolated reef or isolated coastline has its own endemic species or colorvariant.

In the aquarium you should not mix fishes of the same species that come from different locations in the lake. It will relentlessly lead to crossings.

In some species an O (orange) and OB (orange blotch) color morph are known. This is, however, not that common but these fishes are often very brightly and always individually colored. There are also OB males (called MC-cats) but these are extremely rare and therefore often very expensive.
