Formed in 1882 by members of the
schoolboys' Hotspur CC as Hotspur FC and
had early church connections. Added
'Tottenham' in 1884 to distinguish club from
London Hotspur FC. Turned professional in
1895 and elected to the Southern League in
1896 having been rebuffed by the Football
League. Played at two grounds (Tottenham
Marshes and Northumberland Park) before
moving to the site which became known as
White Hart Lane in 1899. Joined the Football
League Second Division 1908. Having failed to
gain a place in the re-election voting, it secured
a vacancy caused by a late resignation.
