Came into being in 1902 upon the bankruptcy
of Newton Heath. Predecessors appear to
have been formed in 1878 as Newton Heath
(LYR) when workers at the Carriage and
Wagon Department at the Lancashire and
Yorkshire Railway formed a club. This soon
outgrew railway competition. Turned
professional in 1885 and founder member of
Football Alliance in 1889. In 1892 Alliance
runners-up Newton Heath was elected to an
enlarged Division One of the Football League.
In 1902 the club became Manchester United
and, in February 1910, moved from Bank
Street, Clayton, to Old Trafford. Premier
League founder member 1992. Four times
Premiership champions and the only side to
have completed the Double twice.
