Leeds City, founded in 1904, took over the
Elland Road ground of the defunct Holbeck
Club and in 1905 gained a Football League
Division Two place. The club was, however,
expelled in 1919 for disciplinary reasons
associated with payments to players during
the
War. The club closed down. Leeds United
FC,
a new professional club, emerged the same
year and competed in the Midland League.
The club was elected to Football League
Division Two for season 1920-21. The club
has subsequently never been out of the top
two divisions. Premier League founder
member 1992.
