Founded in 1905. The Mears brothers
developed Stamford Bridge Athletic Ground,
which they owned, into a football stadium
for
prestigious matches and, prospectively,
nearby Fulham FC. But Fulham did not take
up
the chance so the Mears brothers established
their own club, rejecting possible names
such
as 'London' and 'Kensington' in favour,
eventually, of Chelsea. Judging that the
club
would not be accepted into the Southern
League, it sought membership of the Football
League. This was gained at the first attempt
and it started the 1906-07 season in Division
Two. Premier League founder members 1992.
